It’s not the size that matters

This is my kitchen.

That’s it.

Now please don’t take me wrong. I am not complaining. I’ve grown to love some things about my little kitchen. For example, it’s very easy to clean.  And because we can’t store much food, we never have any food waste. But mostly I love it because what is created inside of it.

And what I’ve learned in the many kitchens I have baked in, both professionally and personally, is that it is not the size of the kitchen that matters, the nice countertops, or the stainless steel appliances. It’s having the right utensils. Since culinary school I have accumulated a selection of kitchen “necessities” I could not bake and cook without. And as you can see I’ve had to get creative in storing this collection.

I get asked quite often what tools I use for certain recipes so I’ve compiled a small list (there will be more to come) to get you started decking out your kitchen.

Vitamix TurboBlend, 2 Speed

Silicone Baking Mat

Microplane Zester/Grate

Food Dehydrator

Pastry Piping Bag and Tips

Silicon Pastry Brush

KitchenAid

Silicone Baking Molds

What’s your favorite kitchen gadget?

  1. I have a huge kitchen with as little counter space until i put in a stainless steel island that you don’t have the space for. I, too, have one kitchen drawer, one cabinet (long), and 2 (short). Thanks for the reminder that a kitchenaid would good some day.

  2. My favorites are a toss up between my Vitamix & Breville juicer.

  3. This looks much like my kitchen in my shoebox sized apartment! Love it though! I must say it would be the Vitamix. There is hardly a day that goes by that I do not make something in that beautiful piece of work :-)

  4. I love, love, love my Vitamix, but recently I picked up a pressure cooker and it might take the place of the Vitamix on my kitchen alter. I am the only vegetarian in the family and it has been extremely helpful in keeping me eating right when I am getting dinner ready for the rest of the family. Seriously, chickpea curry in 10 minutes. How can you beat that? I can get beans ready in no time from dried. I also made sweet and sour chicken thighs, from frozen chicken in 16 minutes. I love it.

  5. It’s funny to read that y’all love y’all pressure cooker. Growing up that’s what every member of my extended family had. The noise that the cooker makes it is annoying to me…so I said, when I have my own house and kitchen I’m never going to own a pressure cooker…instead, I now have a slow cooker, and that one along with my Omega juicer are the best kitchen gadgets I have…well, my clad cookware is the best too!

    • Venus, they are soooo much quieter now, not like your mom’s. The 2nd generation cookers are much better. I never, ever thought I would own one too, but it’s been a good investment.

  6. Love all the comments–and mostly the amazing and beautiful food Sarah puts together in her tiny kitchen! I have a hard time choosing between favorite gadgets–so it may just be my cutting board and porcelain knife! I’ve never cooked meals with my pressure canner, but I certainly can a lot with it in the summer!

  7. Okay, I feel like I am stalking you and your blog. I find myself reading every page and can’t get enough of it. I am so glad I found you! One question, I am currently shopping for food dehydrator. How do you like the one you have? Also, I know everyone loves their Vitamix, but is it really worth the price tag?

    • I’m glad you found me too. In terms of the dehydrator, it works fine, does everything I need it to. I have this brand. i have never used another dehydrator so I have nothing to compare it too.
In terms of the Vita-mix, it depends on what you would use it for and how often you would use it. Because I do a lot with raw foods, I find my Vita-mix not only great, but necessary. If you would only use it for things that a regular blender could handle, I would say save the money for something else. That being said, I LOVE my Vita-mix. :)

  8. I’d love to see a pic of you working in the kitchen space. I’ve often wondered if it would be possible for me to work in a small kitchen, as I always need lots of room because when I cook I cook lots of things at once! Thanks so much, I love your blog and your creativity in the kitchen!

  9. my food procesor!, i love currys and for curry paste works great!
my chefs knife. and cast iron pan
